The war caught Iryna off guard — she and her husband were visiting relatives in Bila Tserkva. On 24 February they woke up to explosions and immediately drove to their country house in a nearby village. It felt like some terrifying movie. But when russian helicopters flew right over the roof of their house — so low that she could see the occupiers’ faces — it became clear: this was reality. From that moment on, Iryna’s life changed forever. She, who had spoken russian all her life, consciously switched to Ukrainian — because she wanted nothing in common with the language of those who came to destroy her country. Now Iryna is teaching Ukrainian to her grandchildren who live in Poland, and she dreams of only one thing — the day when they can visit her without fear. The day when peace returns to Ukraine.
