Anhelina Shunevych, a 13-year-old girl from Lyman, Donetsk region, has lived through the horrors of war and was wounded. In the first days of the invasion, Anhelina’s family and neighbours were hiding in the basement. Among the 15 people, there were many children: from babies to 8-year-olds.

The girl recalls being in the dark, waiting for the fighting to end. They had food and water supplies, but fear did not let go. The most terrifying memory is of airplanes! Anhelina remembers trying to calm her younger brother down, but the sound of the airplanes made her heart sink. When they heard the airplanes, everyone fell to the floor. They did not leave the basement for five days.

Unfortunately, during one of the shelling, Anhelina and her brother received shrapnel wounds. The shells destroyed the house to the ground! Ukrainian soldiers pulled Anhelina and her family out of the rubble and sent them as far away from the front line as possible. On the same day, but a few hours later, the girl’s great-grandmother died.

Anhelina dreams of peace and tranquillity. She wants her family to be together again so that they can live without fear. The war has taken away a lot from them, but Anhelina hopes for a better future.

The girl told her story during a holiday in Zakarpattia. The Rinat Akhmetov Foundation provided assistance in the psychological and physical recovery of the children.
