Zinaida Yurchyk is the head of a paramedic and obstetric station in Pisky village, Mykolaiv region. She has been working in the medical field for over 40 years. She witnessed and participated in the events that took place during the russian invasion of Ukraine.
At the end of February 2022, russian troops entered the village. At first, the occupiers thought they would pass by the village, but quickly realised: this village is of strategic importance for crossing the Inhul River.
The nurse recalls her first wounded during the shelling. A particularly difficult case was a local resident who had developed gangrene. Zinaida appealed to the occupiers’ command to allow her to take him to hospital, but they rejected her request. The only thing left was to inject antibiotics and make bandages. The man barely survived, his leg was amputated after the de-occupation. Zinaida and other doctors worked in conditions of constant danger, but never refused to help.
