This is the story of Oleksandr Zamohylnyi, the headman of the village of Vysoke in the Stavchanske Starosta District of Zhytomyr Region, who shares his experience from the beginning of the full-scale invasion. The settlement, located just 3 kilometers from the front line, became a refuge for soldiers and refugees from the occupied territories. Oleksandr speaks about the community's self-organization, the establishment of checkpoints and a consultation and aid center, as well as numerous examples of the courage and dedication of local residents: “When a man is born, his mission is to be a protector. But not everyone becomes a warrior.”
Out of a population of 1,100, about a hundred went to war — 16 were killed, 5 went missing. Especially moving are the stories of rescuing civilians from occupied territories, supporting the wounded, and the volunteer work of local women who make camouflage nets. These recollections carry a deep awareness of the price of independence and a painful pride in their fellow countrymen.
