2022 was supposed to be the happiest year of Dina’s life – she was expecting her first child. But instead of a peaceful wait, there were explosions, separation from her husband, who was caught up in the occupation of Chernihiv region, and nights spent in a Kyiv car park to the sound of sirens. The family was only able to reunite in March, already in Lutsk, in search of a safe shelter. The whole year was spent moving from place to place, but they did not want to leave Ukraine. Even on the happiest day – their son’s birthday – explosions could be heard nearby again. Motherhood during the war became not just a concern for Dina, but a feat – her little boy already knows what an “air raid alert” is. But today, as she is expecting another child, this expectation has a special meaning – as a symbol of life that continues despite the darkness, as a belief in the rebirth of the family, the country and a peaceful future.
