Rza Nahornyi lives in Vysoke village, Zhytomyr region, where almost every resident knows each other. The year 2014 was a turning point for his family. His son-in-law Andrii went to the front as a volunteer. And a couple of months before this interview was recorded, his son was also called up.
At the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Rza got his first volunteer experience. Together with his fellow villagers, he prepared daily lunches for the brigades defending the Kyiv region. Later, he and his wife joined a volunteer centre in the village. He does whatever he can. The hardest part, Rza says, is the weeks spent without news from his loved ones at the front. Every time he, a Muslim by faith, prays to God for protection. He draws strength and hope from prayer.
