The story of Oksana Zatsepina from Mariupol is a daily struggle for the lives of her loved ones and her own that lasted two and a half months. In March 2022, the building where Oksana and her family were staying caught fire due to russian shelling. The day before, enemy soldiers had locked the residents in the entrance hall! Flames engulfed the building. Oksana, along with her family — including her two adult daughters, her nephew, and her mother — found themselves in a deadly trap. People were only let out when black smoke had already filled the basement.
Escaping the encircled Mariupol was extremely difficult, especially for young men. Oksana was shocked by the words of the driver who advised her to leave her nephew behind in the city, as he might become a "burden" when crossing russian checkpoints. Eventually, they managed to reach Berdyansk. Oksana and her family spent two days waiting for evacuation. On the night of April 1, the family finally reached Zaporizhzhia.
Oksana dreams of her husband returning from the front, and of a small home where they can start over. She says her Mariupol story is part of a greater documentary testimony that must be preserved for future generations — so that no one ever has to go through what she and her family endured.
