The first weeks of the war became a struggle for life for Vasyl: the shelling was drawing closer every day, until a shell struck their yard. The family miraculously managed to hide and survived. Neighbors offered to leave together — and this saved their lives. Just two days after their departure, there was a direct hit on their home. Over the course of a year and a half, their yard and house were hit eight more times — nothing was left of the home. Meanwhile, Huliaipole was being destroyed more and more: shattered neighborhoods, dead neighbors and relatives. The most painful memories for Vasyl are the deaths of relatives who had just come to see whether their home had survived.
