Dmytro is only 11, but he already knows what real danger is. When the russians started shelling Bakhmut heavily, his family spent almost all their time in the basement, where they spent days and nights waiting for silence. Food was brought by volunteers with humanitarian aid from the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation. The most delicious, the boy recalls, were the bars – nourishing and life-saving. The worst thing is not hunger or even explosions, but the realisation that you might not wake up tomorrow.
After being evacuated to Poltava, Dmytro withdrew into himself, hardly ever going out. Psychological support, which was also organised by the Foundation, helped him to return to his normal childhood. Now Dmytro is smiling again, dreaming of a children’s camp and of Ukraine’s victory. And he believes in it sincerely – as only a child can believe.
