“It was scary to find myself under the rubble. I don’t understand why they were killing us”

On 9 March 2022, Vladik, together with his parents, his sister, and her husband, survived an airstrike on the maternity hospital. At the time of the strike, he was in the basement, while his mum and dad were outside. They suffered the most.

“We could hear it very clearly how the planes were flying and dropping bombs. And then a plane dropped an air bomb. In a second, there was almost nothing left of the basement. Everyone was in shock. My pregnant sister, her husband and I were evacuated to the left bank of the city. But there we could hear the bombing too. The ceilings shook. On my birthday, there was almost no shelling, but we were still scared. And we knew nothing about the fate of the parents,” Vladik says.
