In the bustling home of Kateryna Tarusina, a foster mother to 10 children, joy and togetherness were the themes of the day. As part of the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation’s traditional New Year Campaign — an annual initiative under the programme “Rinat Akhmetov to Children” — the Foundation’s team visited this remarkable family with gifts and a festive creative workshop.

The children sat around a large table, deeply engrossed in making unique Christmas ornaments from colourful mosaic tiles. The sense of accomplishment was palpable, with each child delighted by their own handiwork.

“I really loved the workshop. And it was so much fun taking photos together,” shared the children enthusiastically. The family’s eldest is 16, and the youngest is just 4 years old.

During the visit, the children shared their wishes and dreams. One desire united them all — the hope for peace and victory for Ukraine.

“I want the war to end so we can return to Donbas, to our home,” said 11-year-old Lida.

Originally from the Kramatorsk District in Donetsk Oblast, the family was forced to flee their home in March 2022 due to the full-scale invasion. After months of uncertainty, they settled in Kyiv Region.

“We are so thankful for the gifts and joyful moments. We didn’t expect such a surprise. The children are thrilled and so happy,” said Kateryna Tarusina.

“Through the New Year Campaign, children can hold onto their belief in miracles and find ways to express their talents. This is a tradition of kindness that has been ongoing for over 20 years,” said Viktoriya Martynenko, a project manager at the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation.

The New Year Campaign is part of “Rinat Akhmetov to Children”, a programme dedicated to providing wide-ranging support for children across Ukraine. This initiative is one of the Foundation’s top priorities. Over the years, the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation has supported 5 million children.

Thanks to this programme, Ukrainian children receive vital medical care, hearing aids, psychological and physical rehabilitation, as well as opportunities to grow, learn, and pursue their dreams.
