Last night, Ukraine won its first Oscar. The film 20 Days in Mariupol won the award in the Best Documentary category.

We congratulate the team that risked their lives to film russia's crimes and made the world see them. These are Mstislav Chernov, Yevhen Malolietka and Vasylina Stepanenko. 

The film is based on the events in the city of Mariia in March 2022. Watch the stories of the doctors who saved people during the Mariupol siege and became this film's characters at The Museum of Civilian Voices of Rinat Akhmetov Foundation. You can find this collection here

Mstyslav Chernov began his speech with a confession: “I will probably be the first director on this stage to say: I wish I had never made this film. I would have exchanged everything for russia never to invade Ukraine, never to occupy our cities, and for russians not to kill tens of thousands of my Ukrainian fellow citizens. But I cannot change history. I cannot change the past. But we can all change history, make sure that the truth wins. And the people of Mariupol and others who gave their lives will never be forgotten.”

The premiere of 20 Days in Mariupol took place in 2023. Mariupol residents who survived the siege of their city and then saw the film admit that they want to be silent for a long time after watching it.
