Halyna has lived in Mariupol for 50 years. She recalls how the city flourished on the eve of a full-scale war, and how it was destroyed in 2022. Living under shelling in basements, making fires for food and burying the dead in yards – all of this became part of Halyna’s life. Just before she left the city, her friend’s elderly father’s heart gave out under shelling, and they had to leave the city under fire with his body. Now Halyna lives in a modular town in Brovary. She has found solace in volunteer work – she has been making camouflage nets every day for three years now – for the sake of Ukraine’s victory and for the hope of returning to her hometown.
