Dariana Honcharova

“You can count the surviving houses in my town on the fingers of one hand”

Dariana is 16 years old. In 2022, her hometown of Lyman was under Russian occupation for a little over four months. In the fall of that year, the town was liberated. But Lyman remains a zone of active hostilities. Dariana slept in basements and cooked food over a fire. Her family is trying to rebuild the damaged house and garage.

The interview with Dariana was recorded at the Emerald City Social Rehabilitation Center, which was relocated from Sviatohirsk, Donetsk Oblast, to the west of Ukraine. A session here lasts 21 days. Dariana gets along well with children and shows her leadership skills. She dreams of becoming a teacher. She has even chosen a university. But she had to postpone her dream because of the war.
