“When the first bomb was dropped on the maternity hospital, my mom was there”

Ten-year-old Nazar is an IDP from Mariupol. Nazar’s mother was pregnant with her third child and was in the maternity hospital in Mariupol on March 9, 2022. It was the same day that a Russian plane carried out an air strike on the medical facility.

The woman survived, and the boy’s younger sister was born a few days later. Nazar’s father delivered the baby.

The family managed to get out of the occupied city a few months after its capture. Volunteers helped them. Now they live in a hostel for IDPs from Mariupol in Dnipro.

Nazar’s worst memory is how they were all hiding in the basement. His father almost died during the shelling.
