Yevhen Bal was a journalist, writer, and captain of the first rank. He served as a naval officer on submarines of the Northern and Pacific Fleets for over 30 years, more than once going on an autonomous voyage. Since 2014, the man had been active in patriotic and volunteer activities in the Azov region.
On March 18, the Russian military broke into the apartment of 78-year-old writer Yevhen Bal. During a search of the house, soldiers found photos with the Ukrainian defenders and a membership card of the National Writers’ Union of Ukraine. They kidnapped the man and brutally abused him for three days.
On March 21, the Russians released Yevhen Bal with the words, "We are not at war with veterans of the USSR Navy."
"He confirmed that he had been beaten in those three days and that he was seriously injured, but assured that he was recovering," said Pavlo Kushch, a member of the National Writers’ Union of Ukraine.
Unfortunately, Yevhen Bal was unable to recover from the torture. His heart stopped beating on April 2. He did not live 6 days until his 79th birthday.
Rest in peace!
