Maksym Kozachyna

"We hoped that he was wounded but alive."

The Russian military were beating Maksym Kozachyna, a priest, to take a car away from him - this is what the priest’s fellow countrymen have told. When the Vyshhorod district was temporarily occupied by the Russian army, Father Maksym was serving in the church near the town of Ivankiv.

We hoped that he was wounded but alive.

“We hoped till the last minute that he was wounded but alive. However, it was confirmed that he had been murdered,” – says Archbishop Yevstratiy Zoria, the spokesman of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.

Father Maksym was from the Dnipropetrovsk region; in 1996, he entered the Kyiv Theological Seminary of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, the Kyiv Patriarchate, where he studied till 2000. From that time on, he was the rector of the parish of the Nativity of the Holy Mother of God in the village of Rozvazhiv, Ivankiv district, Kyiv region. During the Russian-Ukrainian war, he served as a chaplain.

Rest in peace!
