“I had the opportunity to evacuate, but I didn’t listen to my husband and refused. We spent the first night at work, in the library,” recalls Viktoriia Lisohor, director of the Korolenko Central Library. On the night of March 7, 2022, a shell hit the neighbouring houses. Residents in their pyjamas ran to the library. There were about 60 of them. All the book storerooms were filled with children. It was very cold. We didn’t go home because russian Grads and mortars were firing. Viktoriia was the building-service supervisor. She is sure that the library saved her, her daughter, and everyone else who was there. After all the people had evacuated, the library was still bombed by the enemy.

Я йшла вулицею і плакала. Руїни, трупи. Просто жах
