Hennadii Oliinyk was injured by a mine on the riverbank in his native village of Bobrovyi Kut, Kherson region.

After his village was liberated from russian troops, Hennadii returned home to rebuild the houses and infrastructure that had been damaged by the war.  One weekend, he was returning with his fishing buddies. The path ran through a minefield left behind by the russian occupiers. For several months, the locals had been walking along the seemingly dangerous path. The main rule was: do not step away it!  The fisherman walked behind his friend, who passed freely. But Hennadii stepped on a camouflaged anti-personnel mine, and it exploded.

Doctors had to amputate the man’s right leg. This tragic event occurred on December 24th, 2023, and Hennadiy still remembers the moment of the explosion almost to the second. The man continues to work on his recovery. Together with his fellow villager, who also exploded on a minefield later, he dreams of setting up his own construction company. Hennadii Oliinyk told his story while undergoing rehabilitation provided by the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation.
