About two hundred civilians in the Makariv community of Kyiv region were killed during the first two months of the invasion by Russian troops. Nearly six hundred houses were destroyed and over two thousand more damaged in the community.

In the spring of 2022, the Russian military stopped their military equipment in the schoolyard of the Makovyshche Gymnasium. The school's principal, Viktoriia Cherniavka, recalls how the occupiers tried to remove the flag from the school's flagpole but failed. This interview is not only a testament to the horrors of war, but also a story of resilience and hope. Viktoriia emphasises the importance of memory and preserving history, as the fragments of the Grad rocket that damaged the school became part of the school museum's exhibition and were transferred to the Museum of Civilian Voices.
