“There were craters several meters deep around us”

Alina Markina and her family stayed in the village of Pokrovske until the last moment. They’d lived in the basement for 1.5 months. Huge craters were left around their house after the shelling. Almost all their neighbors had left their homes. Volunteers brought food and water for the remaining village residents. People kept hoping until the very end that the invaders would be driven away.
