Maria Fomintseva

“My dog turned gray because of the shelling...”

In April 2022, Maria Fomyntseva from Horenka (Kyiv Oblast) and her dog Bonia became social media stars. They became popular because of a photo taken by Oleh Pereverzev of an elderly woman with a dog wearing a headscarf. According to 80-year-old Maria Yukhymivna, it was the scarf that saved Bonia from a concussion.

During the Second World War, Maria was orphaned, having lost both her parents. She never thought that she would have to survive a war again.
